Fairfield Infant School in Cockermouth needs to raise more than £20,000 to replace a splintered climbing frame and five picnic benches.

The school’s 200 children are suffering at playtimes because the wooden equipment, which is around 16 years old, has become bashed and has had to be tapped off to stop children from hurting themselves.

Fairfield Infants PTA will hold a series of fund-raising events and will apply for grants.

They hope to raise the money to replace the equipment by next summer.

Sarah Glass, chairman of the PTA, said: “There is a serious need for the new equipment.

“The school doesn’t have the money, so we will do what we can to try and raise it.

“It’s mportant for the children to go outside and play especially in the summer as we feel learning through play is very important.”

Events will include a wine tasting evening with Nick Shill, of Shills on Station Street, in the school hall on Tuesday from 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10.

The school will also hold a Christmas Fayre on Saturday, December 1, from 11am to 2pm.
