An exhibtion to mark Maryport’s links to the Titanic was officially opened at the town’s Wave Centre last Friday by Workington MP Tony Cunningham.

He said the exhibition, called Maryport to the Titanic, was one of the best in the North.

It chronicles the town’s maritime history and its links, through the White Star shipping line to the ill-fated Titanic.

Created by volunteers from Maryport Maritime Museum, the exhibition runs until May 13.

Hundreds of people have already been to see it, and by the end of its run more than 2,000 pupils from across Cumbria will have attended.

Mr Cunningham paid tribute to the volunteers, who he said had done a fantastic job in creating the exhibition, and added that he hoped visitors to the Lake District this spring would take the time to go to Maryport.

The exhibition includes dresses from the blockbuster movie Titanic, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, and visitors can view a replica of a first-class restaurant, a third-class cabin and the ship’s radio room.

The admission price includes a ticket with the name and details of individual passengers. At the end of the tour visitors can view a passenger list to discover what happened to the individuals.
