The former Sunderland midfielder, who also played for Barnsley and Carlisle United, will star in the game that will raise cash for CFM radio’s Cash For Kids Appeal.

Workington Reds manager Darren Edmondson and a host of Reds players will be involved in the match, which kicks off at Reds’ Borough Park stadium at 2.30pm.

Reds captain David Hewson, Kyle May, Mark Boyd and Aaran Taylor, who recently quit the club for a trial at Carlisle United, will take part.

The CFM team will also include Workington pub landlord Kevin Norman and members of CFM.

Jamie Lomas, who plays Hollyoaks bad boy Warren Fox, will lead a team of big names from the Channel 4 TV soap.

Actors Ashley Taylor Dawson, who has won three sexiest male titles at the British Soap Awards as Darren Osborne, Anthony Quinlan, who plays Gilly Roach, long-serving cast member Nick Pickard, who plays Tony Hutchinson, Tosin Cole, who plays Neil Cooper, and Craig Vye, who plays Ethan Scott, are also in the team.

Event organiser Diane Campbell, CFM’s Cash for Kids charity manager, organised a similar event 13 years ago.

She said: “It’s great to have the Hollyoaks team back in Workington so many years after they first came up.

“We have worked very hard to make sure this game goes ahead, and I hope a lot of money is raised for local children.”

Tickets cost £5 and can be bought from the reception area at Workington Reds between 10am and noon today, at the town’s Tesco store, or by calling 01228 81550.

After the match, Chasers in Washington Street will host a party, with tickets costing £10.
