Maryport's Ewanrigg estate is preparing for what residents hope will become an annual winter festival.

Workshops are being held at the Ewanrigg Community Centre and Boys’ Club to make lanterns for a parade around the estate on Saturday, December 1.

Storyteller and organiser Ian Douglas said a lantern parade was held last year with Big Lottery funding to raise awareness of the £1 million which had been allocated to Ewanrigg to help lift the estate from depravation.

He said: “We have finished the awareness stage and will be looking at how the money will be spent. This year is a celebration of that.

“It is hoped that the lantern parade will become an annual event to celebrate and bring people together.”

Lantern-making workshops are being held at the community centre from 5pm to 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from noon to 3pm on Saturdays.

The Boys’ Club workshops are from 5pm to 7pm on Wednesdays until the event.
