New Maryport inshore rescue bid to build boathouse

Maryport Inshore Rescue is launching another attempt to get a new boathouse.

The voluntary lifeboat group has applied to Allerdale council for planning permission to demolish the existing boathouse and build a new one.

Mike Messenger, station officer, said it was the first step towards replacing the existing boathouse with larger premises to include better facilities.

The need for new lifeboat headquarters was identified by consultants who looked at a multi-million-pound regeneration project on the harbour.

Earlier plans were shelved when the Northwest Development Agency was disbanded, but Mr Messenger said a new boathouse was desperately needed.

He said: “We have put in the plans and, if we get permission, we will try to raise the funds.”
