Online slur sparks West Cumbrian Morrisons probe

Morrisons has launched an investigation after a Workington store worker branded customers as “retarded morons” over panic fuel buying.


The response came after remarks posted by Tony Little on the Times & Star’s Facebook page, which has 5,483 fans, in response to a story about the fuel tanker drivers’ dispute.

Morrisons bosses have promised to take action and have launched an investigation into the comments made last Friday.

Mr Little, whose profile on the social networking website describes him as manager at the Derwent Drive store, said: “I already knew our customers were morons, but this just seals it. Absolutely ridiculous.

“Even more retarded than when they panic buy for the two days we are shut over Christmas.

“The queue was from the roundabout to Morrisons from 7am until I finished work, but probably went on until closing time. Stupid.”

Mr Little’s post has now been deleted but a spokesman for Morrisons said the company was shocked and disappointed by the comments.

He added: “We pride ourselves on being friendly and respectful to customers and this matter is being investigated and appropriate action will be taken.”

The supermarket confirmed that Steven Kirkbride was manager of its Workington store.

Vehicles queued as far as Topps Tiles on Derwent Drive last week as motorists filled up at Morrisons petrol station.

i work for a big local company and its the same there , you dont put anything about work on and if you do you gotta say "these represent my views and opinions and not those of *companyname*" its much easier to not talk about work all together on facebook!

If Mr Little has lost his job as claimed, we will look into that. If Mr Little wants to speak us, we would welcome that too.
We will also investigate other company's stances on Facebook/social networking usage - what would your boss think and what action would they take if you called your customers "retarded morons" on a public forum that thousands of people can see, like Mr Little's comments which were posted on the Times & Star page, not his own feed and on which he clearly stated he worked for the supermarket?
In answer to the last comment, we have no gripe with Morrisons, it's where Mr Little said he worked.
