Workington's hugely successful Paint the Town Red festival raised £12,500 for Hospice at Home West Cumbria.

More than 50,000 people attended the May 19 event, which saw activities in Vulcan Park, Curwen Park and the town centre.

Helen Fowler, chairman of the organising committee said: “In view of the economic climate we were certainly pleased. It was a brilliant day and everyone had fun.”

It aimed to raise as much money as possible for the hospice, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Bob Barnby, fund-raising manager at the hospice, said: “We are delighted that it raised this much, especially this year when fund-raising has been quite difficult because of the recession.

“We are very grateful to the people, especially the committee, who put in an incredible amount of work.”

Most of the money was raised through the event’s Big Red Raffle, programme sales and donations.

Some came from firms and organisations which had fund-raising stalls at the fair.

The festival was sponsored by Nuclear Management Partners, Allerdale council, Amcor, Eon, Workington Town Council, Workington Rotary, the Times & Star and Washington Square.

It was the second Paint the Town Red festival, following the inaugural event in 2009.

Helen said the committee would meet to review the festival and consider whether it can be put on again.

Prizes in the Big Red Raffle included a 42-inch TV from McCulloughs, a £200 holiday voucher from Cockermouth Travel, a two-minute trolley dash at Tesco, a £150 voucher for Higham Hall, a £60 voucher for Hunday Manor Hotel, a Border Air Training flight voucher, Sunday lunch at Lyzzick Hall, jewellery from Sinclair Jewellers, a boat trip around the Robin Rigg wind farm from E.on, a food hamper from Marks & Spencer, a visit to M-Sport and a £25 voucher from Haighs.

The winners were Sandy Cowie, Alan Clague, Lyn Doorbar, Mr and Mrs Holliday, Sylvia Alderson, Margaret Smith, Brian Holmes, Alice Clark, Sue Leadbetter, Tom Foy, K Moore, H James, J Austin, Elsie Seely, June Gerrard and Katherine Cooper.
