Paralympic role for musicians

Musicians from across West Cumbria will perform in a national event in Workington to mark the end of the 2012 Paralympic Games.

More than 500 UK towns and cities will take part in The Bandstand Marathon on September 9, co-ordinated by arts organisation Superact.

SoundWave, based at Workington’s Carnegie Theatre, was commissioned by Superact to organise the event at The Hub in Workington from 1pm to 5pm.

It will include drumming and music technology workshops, as well as live performances from local artists.

SoundWave’s youth singing group, Sing Like a Star, will perform. Cumbrian artists Sid Wright, Anne Marie McStraw, Katie Gentry, Oliver Burns and Claire Jackson will also play.

Christina Cremins, design and marketing assistant for SoundWave, said: “It’s great to celebrate the musical talent we have in West Cumbria.”

Katie Gentry, 36, of Main Street, Cockermouth, has been performing for a number of years and will play an acoustic set on the day.

She said: “SoundWave do a lot of workshops and work with young musicians and it’s good to keep the encouragement going. It’s an opportunity to do a gig in front of a lot of different people.”

Chloe Harkness, 15, of Newlands Lane, Workington, who attends drumming and music technology sessions at SoundWave, will perform in the drumming workshops and will also sing three songs.
