PHOTOS: Crowds flock to Seaton Carnival

An ocean of colour, comic book heroes and carnival queens swept through Seaton for the annual carnival.

Villagers lined the streets to see Julia Benson, the 101st carnival queen, at Saturday’s community showpiece.

Dressed in a stunning white dress, the 11-year-old was chauffeured through the village inside a giant crown float with friend Ellie Ackerley.

Celia Tibble, one of the organisers, said: “This is one of the major events in Seaton’s calendar.

“It’s a chance for the village to get involved in a community event.

“It’s great to see parents and grandparents enjoying the fun with their young ones, especially those who were involved when they were small.”

Seaton’s rugby league players were among the star attractions, dressing as nuns from Whoopi Goldberg’s hit film Sister Act and dancing in the parade.

Robert Wilson, the team’s physiotherapist, said: “We just wanted to add a bit of fun to the carnival atmosphere.

“We had a lot of fun dressing up as women but the lads took their parts very seriously.”

Natalie Melville and Debbie Gilmour put together the team’s dance routine, which included a raunchy rendition of LMFAO’s Sexy and I Know It.

Nine floats and seven entertainment acts took part in the parade, which went along Church Road, Lowca Lane, Barncroft Avenue, Hunters Drive and Causeway Road.

Seaton Junior School pupils dressed as Olympians and performed a dance in honour of the London games.

Molly Tibble was rose queen, Erin Smith was snow queen, Rosie Walsh was ivy queen, Georgia Robyn Douglas-Brown was Britannia and Harry Anthony Douglas-Brown was Herald.

Trevor Fee, chairman of Seaton Parish Council said: “To see so many people supporting such a historical event in our community is great.

“The carnival is part of our heritage and should be celebrated.”

Lauren Dawson, Sandra Benson, Sue Bell and Andrea Stewart were also part of the organising committee.
