Sun shines on Cockrock

Cockermouth Rock Festival 2008

THE sun is shining on music festival Cockrock this morning. (Sunday).

Cockermouth’s own mini-Glastonbury – and that’s just the mud – is in full swing.

About 2,000 people are enjoying the music and the atmosphere at the Wellington Farm gig and more are expected to arrive today to take advantage of the expected good weather.

Yesterday saw more than 30 bands take to the four stages and highlights included the much anticipated Sneakypeeks and A Lesser Concern, from Maryport and Dearham, who opened the Slingshot stage.

The group, regulars on the pub circuit, have started writing their own stuff, which got the crowds going as much as their usual covers.

A gutsy performance from Keri Farish, of South Quay on the Rapid Fire stage was enhanced with the sun coming out for one of the only times yesterday and the Soul Survivors gave us good old rock and roll.

Seventhwave, also on the Rapid Fire stage, used a unique way of ensuring a great audience for their first song by giving away chewing gum and entertained by a mix of Kaiser Chiefs, Stereophonics, Thin Lizzy and ACDC.

Workington friends Paul Robertson, 25, of Clay Street and Paul Hillhouse, of John Street, said they were enjoying the atmosphere of the two-day event.

Paul said: “It’s our first time here, we were made to come a friend who was here last year and it’s just great. It’s a relaxed atmosphere and it’s a good event because it’s not corporate – it’s still got that magic.”

  • Photographs and video from the event will be uploaded later today.
