Cockermouth's Taste Cumbria food festival promises to serve up the best of Cumbrian cuisine and celebrity chefs, including James Martin and Simon Rimmer.

More than 20,000 visitors are expected to flock to the area over the two-day festival, on September 29 and 30.

James Martin, Saturday Kitchen TV chef and housewives’ favourite, will headline the event with Sunday Brunch star Simon Rimmer.

They will demonstrate their skills in a chef’s theatre and there will be food and drink from more than 100 of Cumbria’s best producers, hoteliers and restaurateurs.

The festival, supported by the Times & Star, will also include a Michelin-starred pop-up restaurant.

It will be run by the award-winning Simon Rogan, of L’Enclume in Cartmel, who is currently riding high in BBC2’s Great British Menu competition.

He will bring his innovative culinary style to the festival.

One Show regular and Observer food critic Jay Rayner will tell hilarious tales from his new book My Dining Hell: Twenty Ways to Have a Lousy Night Out.

He will also bring a band of jazz musicians to the event.

The festival, which is in its third year, will boast stalls with an assortment of specialist local foods in its producers’ market.

There will be demonstrations of marmalade, fly-fishing and foraging in a series of materclasses.

There will also be a continental market from Cockermouth’s French twin town of Marvejols.

The festival is supported by Jennings Brewery, which will hold a Cumbria beer festival during the event.

Festival organiser Mary Houston said: “We’re planning our most ambitious festival to date.

“It’s a great celebration of all that’s good to eat in the county, from damsons to sticky toffee pudding, to game to salt marsh lamb.

“Cumbrian food has a great diversity and integrity we can be proud of.”
