Two sides meet in row over Workington community gardens

People fighting a planned community garden behind their homes in Westfield, Workington, will meet the people behind the project on Wednesday.
People living on Garth Road, Ghyll Road and Westfield Drive wrote letters to planners calling on them to turn down an application by Derwent & Solway Housing Association.
But Allerdale council’s development panel last month gave permission for a community garden on a triangular plot behind their homes.
It is one of three sites in the town earmarked by the housing association for community gardens, which it says will address health inequality and promote financial inclusion and healthy eating.
But some residents fear that their privacy will be ruined, with the garden overlooking their homes, and that it will become a magnet for anti-social behaviour.
They have called a meeting with Derwent & Solway, landowner Westfield Housing Association and others including the police.
They hope to convince the people behind the project not to go ahead.
Wendy O’Neil, spokesman for the residents, said: “The residents living close to the site want it overturned. There are three or four residents interested in the project and that’s fine – we appreciate their point of view – but the lion’s share of the residents are against the project.”
Everyone with an interest in the project is welcome at the meeting at the Minto Centre, Westfield, at 6.30pm.
