A Workington woman hopes to finally tackle her fear of heights this weekend when she hangs from one of Cumbria's highest buildings.

Michelle Jones, 35, of Sea View Drive, aims to abseil down Carlisle’s Civic Centre to raise money for the Cash For Kids charity.

The event was originally due to take place in May but was postponed because of a lack of numbers.

The challenge is now due to be part of a CFM Christmas event tomorrow.

Michelle, who is a teacher at Ellenborough and Ewanrigg Infant School in Maryport, said the wait had done nothing to settle her nerves.

She said: "Truthfully I wasn't as scared back in May but now I've seen a video on the CFM Facebook page that shows how it looks from the top, I am feeling very nervous.

"I have actually persuaded another person to do it. Sally Newbon spent a short time doing a placement in my class as part of her teaching degree. "She has now signed up and we are doing it together so I think this will help us both.

"I still want to do the challenge as I don't want to let people down after they have sponsored me.

"We are actually having our yearly work Christmas shopping day on the same day and I'm missing this so that I can still do the abseil.

"I'm more nervous than excited but hoping on the day the adrenaline kicks in and takes over the nerves.

"I'm looking forward to a drink waiting for me at the bottom."

Michelle had set herself a fund-raising target of £100 but has already achieved more than double that.
