Bryony and the many pieces of her art

A COLLAGE on the toilet wall of a Northampton cafe was part of Bryony Boughton’s first collage exhibition 10 years ago.
Bryony, of Cockermouth, has come a long way since then.
Her latest collage work “Collage et tu” is now on show at Neo’s in Cockermouth.
This is the first time that Bryony has shown her collages locally.
Although Bryony works in various mediums, including textiles, ceramics and photography, collage is her favourite.
She says: “I am a hoarder and collect lots of different things. I can spend hours cutting and ripping images out of magazines and then sorting and categorising them. I get lost in the process.
“A collage is like an elaborate jigsaw. I consider it to be like painting because you add layers to your work.”
Bryony is inspired by colour and form and it can take her up to three weeks to produce a collage.
Her exhibition feature seven large framed collages and one that isn’t framed.
‘Solfest’ was inspired by the party atmosphere she experienced at the summer music festival held near Silloth , while ‘Religion’ is pictorial with a canvas split into nine sections.
Bryony, 36, who grew up in Ennerdale, adds: “I think some of my collages could be used in interior design.”
She suffered a stroke two years ago, leaving her unable to use her right hand properly. She says it has now recovered about 50 per cent to enable her return to working with collage.
She says: “Doing collage is a release for me. When you do it you are in a meditative state and it calms your mind.
“I would like to be able to communicate some of my feelings after the stroke through future work.”
The exhibition at Neo’s in Cockermouth continues to May 31. Neo’s is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm.
