The Maryport artist has painted a picture celebrating the town’s Blues Festival, and it will take pride of place in an exhibition at Her Citi in Crosby St.

It will be a rare chance for residents to see the work of the town’s best known artist as her Cumbrian exhibits are now exclusive to The Necessary Angel gallery in Keswick.

Shirley, 76, said: “It all started when I popped into Her Citi for a cup of coffee. Debbie Wright told me she had seen an article about me and would love to hang something of mine.

“I thought she meant one painting but it has turned into an exhibition.”

She said Debbie had asked for the exhibition to be held in the run-up to the Maryport Blues Festival this month, so she decided to create a piece especially for the occasion.

The painting will be available in print and in card form for anyone who wants to take away a memory of their time in Maryport.

Shirley has sold her art worldwide and her works were included in a major exhibition in New York.

Originally from London, she was a successful designer in fashion and took up painting in 1975. She now lives at Inglis Court.

The exhibition at Her Citi opens today (Friday) and will run until after the Blues Festival at the end of the month.
