Age Concern celebrates 30 years

MORE than 500 elderly people from across the county rolled back the years at Workington’s Carnegie Theatre to celebrate their age with an event, organised by Age Concern to celebrate its 30th anniversary in Northwest Cumbria.

Chinese martial art Tai Chi was taught, a cookery class was put on by Wigton chef John Crouch, tango and salsa classes were held and an opera was performed.

Geoff Thomas, 77, of Carlisle Walk, Moorclose, Workington, said: “I think the day has been a success and I have enjoyed myself. The cooking class was useful.”

Tom Hewitt, 74, of Pearl Road, Workington, said: “I have had a really nice day. We went to the cooking display and I was really impressed. The food smelt and tasted lovely I have just had a hip replacement so I definitely don’t feel as old as I am.”

Margaret Irving, 80, of Harrington Road, Workington, said: “We took part in the dancing and had a really good time. I don’t feel my age and seeing so many people who are older enjoying themselves is a really good feeling.”

Those that attended were also treated to lunch in the Trades Hall.

Johnny Wragg, 88, of Pennine View, Silloth, said: “Lunch was lovely and the whole day has been great.

“Today has been really worthwhile and quite an eye opener. I didn’t realise I was such a good dancer.”

Ron Munby, chairman of Age Concern, said: “It is important that older people are looked after and the 450 volunteers we have do that. They work exceptionally hard and some have been working with us for the entire time we have been in West Cumbria.

“It is important that in later life you remain active and as I have seen today, the older people in West Cumbria are definitely active.”
