Carnival goes from strength to strength

COLOURFUL Broughton Carnival has again been hailed a success – drawing crowds as large as last year’s diamond jubilee.

The parade, which included lots of comedy acts, brought the village alive on Saturday afternoon, with visitors from Cockermouth, Dearham and Maryport.

The Irish Rovers, from the Sun Dial Inn pub in Little Broughton, jigged their way to winning best entertainment.

The Broughton Scouts’ Chinese dragon won them best child group on foot.

Carnival committee secretary Anne Davis said: “The streets were busy. It seems to be going from strength to strength and there was a really nice atmosphere.

“There was just a short shower at the end, so we were really lucky with the weather.”

This year’s carnival royalty were Gemma Davis, 16, Miss Broughton; Rebecca Mills, nine, Rose Queen; Jo-anna Cubby, 11, Retiring Queen; Jonathan Bell, nine, Herald; Bethany Clarke, seven, Gypsy Queen; Olivia Winter, eight, Fairy Queen; Stephanie Davis, 11, Carnival Queen elect; Chloe Waterson, nine, Ivy Queen; and Lauryn Clucas, eight, Snow Queen.

Queens in Cars: Sian Lawson. Visiting Queens on Floats: Louise Mumberson. Open Class Floats: Ellie Laidlow. Adult Group on foot: Funky Fairies. Child Independent on Foot: Kieran Bell. Child Group on Foot: Broughton Scout Group (Chinese Dragon). Decorated Wheels: George Collister, Georiga Fell and Ciden-Jay Collister.

Mixed Child/Adult Group: Benidorm. Entertainment On Route: Browton Rovers (Sun Dial).
