A SIGNED pair of Amir Khan’s boxing gloves have been given away in a charity raffle held at a Workington dentists.
More than £200 was raised for Marie Curie Cancer Care at a tea party at the John Street Dental Practice earlier this month.
The gloves were donated to the event because dentist Michael King’s technician knew Khan’s cousin.
Lyn Williams, business consultant for the practice, helped organise the event.
She said “We received a flyer from Marie Curie and thought it was a really worthwhile cause. Cancer is a disease for which no one can provide a 100 per cent solution. But it is one that affects so many people’s lives so we were really glad to help in any way that we could.”
Jeff Taylor, who owns Jeff Taylor Carpets on Oxford Street and Taylor’s Furnishings on Clay Flatts, won the gloves.
He has given them to his 11-year-old son, James, who is a big fan of the lightweight Bolton boxer.
Mr Taylor said that the cause was close to his family’s heart.
He said: “James lost his nan Rose Smith to cancer, and my wife’s mother Val Roe died of the disease at only 43 years of age.
“James has even given £10 out of his own money because the cause is so important to him.
“Although he has decided to keep the gloves for now he might decide to auction them one day to raise more money for the charity in memory of his nan.”
Mr King said: “ I want to thank everyone who helped make the event a success.”
