More than £55,000 has been raised for the MS Society by hikers from across the UK.

Yvonne Booth, 42, organised the 10in10 challenge where walkers climbed to the top of 10 peaks in 10 hours in aid of the society.

Her husband Duncan suffers from multiple sclerosis and she set up the event following his diagnosis in 2010.

She said: "Duncan's diagnosis was extremely difficult to accept. Multiple sclerosis is a devastating neurological disease and has changed our lives forever.

"But, after a desperately sad six months, our spirits were lifted by the support from our local community in Keswick and we decided, that while we might not be able to cure MS, we could help raise money for research into one."

Duncan's passion for climbing inspired Yvonne to design and create the challenge and despite his diagnosis he has been able to keep up with his climbing.

The first 10in10 challenge took place in 2011 and this year's success means the running total now stands at more than £160,000.

The event began at the Swinside Inn and there was also a lighter 5in5 challenge.

Money raised will help fund research into the condition which currently has no cure and affects areas such as sight, speech and balance.

The mother-of-three added: "We’re delighted to have the ongoing support of Sir Chris Bonington who has walked the 5in5 with his Berghaus Team – much to the delight of the other participants."

Plans are already under way for 2016. Visit www.justgiving.com/Duncan-Booth6 for more information.
