Netherton Slimming World group has collected 70 bags of clothes they’ve slimmed out of to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Nicky Thornborrow, who runs the Saturday morning Slimming World group in Maryport, encouraged members, their friends and families to spring-clean their wardrobes and collect the clothes, shoes and accessories they had successfully slimmed out of, to generate stock for Workington’s Cancer Research UK shop.

The group, which meets in All Souls Church hall, Netherton, have lost over 100 stones since January this year, were taking part in the organisation’s national fundraising campaign, the Big Slimming World Clothes Throw.

Last year, Slimming World’s Big Clothes Throw raised £1.7m for Cancer Research UK, and this year the organisation aims to raise £2m for the charity.

She said, as well as helping a worthwhile charity, the clothes throw had been a way to celebrate members’ slimming success and to promote the message that healthy eating could reduce the risk of cancer.

Maureen Key joined in September and has lost nearly six stones and dropped five dress sizes so far.

She was recently crowned the group’s Greatest Loser 2016, and was able to collect her prize without using her walking frame.

Maureen said: “It felt really liberating to donate all my old clothes.

“I actually enjoyed bagging them up and saying goodbye – it felt like I was saying goodbye to the old me!

“I used to feel like there was no hope for me, I was in constant pain with not much to look forward to, but now I’m much more active and confident, I’ve made so many new friends and wouldn’t miss group for the world!”

The Netherton group meets on Saturdays at 9.30am at All Souls Church hall.
