Allerdale has today been named as the happiest area to live in the UK in a new report.

Published by the Telegraph and Hampton International, the results combine house prices with data from the Office of National Statistics Life Satisfaction Index, and places Allerdale in the top spot.

Copeland also bagged a place in the top 10.

Alan Smith, Allerdale council leader, said: “We’re not at all surprised by these findings.

"Whichever way you turn, we’ve got some of the country’s best scenery on our doorstep; from the amazing coastline of the Solway to our sparkling lakes and impressive fell ranges.

“Allerdale is also a thriving area to do business and is home to a number of market-leading companies as well as some fantastic training and education facilities, which ensure our young people develop the skills to enter and prosper in the workforce. We’re also committed to creating more affordable housing to make sure we keep these young people and their skills within our local area. Combine this with our breathtaking scenery and the quality of life on offer, in my opinion, there is no better place to live and work.”

Johnny Morris, head of residential research for Hamptons, said: “Housing markets close to areas of outstanding natural beauty top the list as happiest and affordable places to live.

"Picturesque countryside seems to be a defining feature for many areas of the top 10. Life in the country, a good view and not too many neighbours seem to be the secret formula to happiness.”
