A Cockermouth man who set up a popular 10k race four years ago has handed over the organising baton.

Andy Rodger launched the Lorton 10k in 2012.

He wanted to give something back to Lorton Primary School where his three children were attending at the time.

Clare, David and Louise have since moved on to Cockermouth School.

The event, which takes place next month, will now be run by Friends of Lorton school, who have been working alongside Andy over the years.

They presented him with a free race number this week and thanked him for all his support.

Hundreds of runners have taken part in the race since it was first launched, from elite athletes to 10k first timers.

Everyone is presented with a homemade biscuit medal at the end.

The race, which raises funds for the after-school club, has evolved into a huge community effort, with lots of parents and villagers helping out with marshalling and the WI keeping everyone fed and watered.

Lorton WI raised £500 for school funds last year, by selling a range of cakes and drinks.

Andy, who runs Cockermouth Petcare, said: "I've really enjoyed running it over the years, it's such a big community event, with so many people helping out.

"It's a great route and I'm really looking forward to actually taking part this year.

"I know the race is in good hands and will keep going from strength to strength."

More than 100 people have already entered the race which takes place at 11am on Saturday, March 12, from Lorton Primary School.

Entry forms can be picked up from the village shop or follow the link on Lorton 10k's page on social networking website Facebook.

All entrants can use their race number to get a 10 per cent discount at the New Balance shops in Keswick and Flimby.
