The 37th annual Allonby art exhibition opens today, with 47 artists showing 220 works.

This year the exhibition is also promoting a children’s book, Katie and the Flood, which gives a child’s eye view of the destruction caused by Storm Desmond in December.

The book has been illustrated by Irene Sanderson, who will open the exhibition this afternoon, accompanied by author Sue Fox.

Tomorrow, Anna McKay, who illustrated some pages of the book, will also be at the exhibition. As well as adding to the book, she has her own works on display.

Around 500 people are expected to visit during the four-day event.

Janet Wilshaw, art exhibition committee chairman, said: “We do think that holding this exhibition in the same weekend as the blues does bring people here.”

She said she was grateful to a hard working committee who made it possible.

The official opening of the exhibition takes place at 4pm today and it will be open to the public until 8pm.

Tomorrow and Sunday it is open from 10am to 8pm and on Monday from 10am to 4pm.
