A Cockermouth arts centre has smashed its £15,000 crowdfunding target in just over a month.

More than 200 people showed their support for Cockermouth's Kirkgate Centre by donating via crowdfunding website IndieGoGo.

Supporters raised £10,405 which will go towards fitting out community spaces in its planned £2 million new building development, with a further £4,000 donated by people in person and Gift Aid tipping the total sum over £17,000.

People could contribute as little as £10 and be rewarded for their donations.

Rewards, depending on how much was contributed, included specially-produced Kirkgate mugs and T-shirts, private screenings and the chance to have your name on a seat in the new auditorium.

Centre staff, volunteers and users also created an appeal video which was shown at a Friends of the Kirkgate Quiz Night.

Kirkgate marketing manager Katie Barrie said: "We're so grateful, in 35 days we think that's a great amount to raise.

"We're really happy and immensely grateful for the support and it shows that a lot of people do care about this development, the building and making a great community arts venue for Cockermouth.

"We know people are pressed and there are a lot of demands on people financially these days so the generosity has been breathtaking.

"We'll have much better, more flexible and air-conditioned community spaces which will be used to satisfy more requirements.

"It should create a place where people want to come and encourage more people to use the centre.

"We've been through a huge amount in Cockermouth and it's really good to have something positive to look forward to.

"It's great for the people who live here and the visitors who come."
