A Cockermouth artist spent the day at Windsor Castle as part of an annual competition and went on to win an award.

Brian Smith took part in En Plein Air, which involves artists from all over the country. They had to create a masterpiece within a six-hour time frame at various locations in the castle.

Brian's painting won the people’s prize award.

He said: “It was well worth the long journey from Cumbria despite the challenging weather on the painting day.”

The competition started in 2012 as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and has continued every year since. It is open to all artists, professional or amateur.

Deborah James, director at Windsor Events, said: “It was a real art spectacle. There was oil, acrylic, bronze and gold leaf, collage and watercolour on artwork from just a few inches in size right up to a metre wide."
