A Lorton woman and her partner performed at the British Country Music Awards, which was watched by six million people, and won the Song of the Year award.

Melanie Greggain, 27, went to Lorton Primary School and later Cockermouth School before moving to Manchester to work as a professional musician.

Along with partner Luke Thomas, they perform as Luke & Mel.

They both play the guitar and sing.

Mel's parents are Brian and Joan Greggain, who live in Lorton and used to run The Wheatsheaf.

Mel said: "We write our own music, promote it and do gigs up and down the country.

"We were absolutely ecstatic to win Song of the Year, with Somethin' about a Woman, which we co-wrote with Matt Greaves and Ann Bailey. It was amazing."

The London awards nights was streamed live across the world.

Luke & Mel formed three years ago, having met through performing in the UK touring theatre show, Country Legends. They supported Grammy-nominee James House on his 2014 and 2015 UK tours. 

In May they they opened for the legendary Engelbert Humperdinck at a sold-out show in Manchester as part of his 50th anniversary world tour.
