Workington Town Band can continue its revival after receiving a cash boost from the Times & Star.

The band has been given £300 by the Times & Star Charitable Trust towards new instruments.

It was resurrected in August 2013 with five members after ending in the early 1990s and has both a senior and a junior group.

They aim to promote brass band music and entertain local communities and also perform at local events.

And just months after reforming, the band performed at the Christmas Light Switch On and at Morrisons as part of Armed Forces Day.

The musicians have more events scheduled this year and raised £4,000 last years through fundraising, grants and donations.

The ages across the senior and junior bands range from as young as seven to 82.

Jayne Thomas, secretary, explained that they were also raising money for new jackets for the members and that instruments can cost as much as £7,000.

She said: "The money will really help, every penny counts. It's quite an expensive hobby and the average cost of instruments can be thousands.

"Last year we did quite a few concerts and this year we're quite busy. We've been asked back next year to one event and we've received some good feedback."
