A new bereavement support group for parents will launch in Cockermouth tomorrow.

It will be run by Team Evie, the charity set up by Great Broughton couple Greg and Jill Johnston after the death of their six-month-old daughter in 2015.

The couple are determined her short life will leave a legacy, and people have helped them to raise thousands of pounds for families with sick children.

Recently they donated a mobile library to the children’s ward at Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary.

The latest venture will be for parents who have suffered the loss of a child.

The charity is working with health visitor Helen Westwood.

Organisers want to provide a chance to meet others who have had similar experiences.

An open day will take place at Victoria Hall, in High Sand Lane, Cockermouth, tomorrow from 11am to 3pm.

The charity aims to set up regular group meetings in Cockermouth to encourage and support bereaved families.

Mr Johnston said that following Evie’s death the family found there was little support in Cumbria.

He added: “Losing a child can leave parents feeling isolated.

“Our group will tackle this and give parents a safe, friendly environment to meet others and support each other.

“We are starting with our open day to meet as many parents as possible who can come down and have a cuppa with us.”

Mr and Mrs Johnston have pledged that the memory of Evie will live on in the life of their new daughter Imani, who was born last year.
