Daffodil Day will be held in Cockermouth tomorrow, with lots planned for the town.

The town’s Rotary club held its first Daffodil Day, in celebration of poet William Wordsworth, last spring. This year’s event, which runs from 10am to 4pm, is bigger and better.

Activities will be held in All Saints’ Church, where Wordsworth was christened.

Many town groups will have stalls and displays, including the Rotary, civic trust, museum group, WI, Soroptimists, Kirkgate Centre and Cockermouth School.

Cockermouth WI’s craft group has made more than 60 paper daffodils which they will hand out from their stall tomorrow to help spread the word about the group.

The Wordsworth Trust will run drop-in craft sessions for children, poetry sessions and talks throughout the day in the church.

There will also be refreshments, exhibitions and music recitals by Castlegate Singers, Altemusik Recorder Group and Cockermouth Mechanics Band.

The event will be opened by Lord and Lady Egremont, who will later head into town to judge the best shop window.

Five thousand daffodil bulbs were planted by the Rotary club in Harris Park last year. More than 35,000 were planted throughout the town and its surroundings the previous year.

The event is expected to provide a much-needed boost for the town.

Organiser Ray Day said: “The Rotary club is pleased to be able to make a contribution to the town by organising Daffodil Day. We hope it will bring visitors into the town and help traders get back on their feet.

“It’s been a real team effort. It’s marvellous that everyone from last year was keen to be involved again as well as some others.”
