Fans of cycling and art are invited to combine their skills ahead of the Tour of Britain's visit to Cockermouth next month.

The Kirkgate Centre has teamed up with sound sculptor Ben Gates to run family workshops to create rideable, playable and decorative bike sculptures to mark the third stage of the tour, which visits the town on September 8.

The first workshop will take place on September 3 from 10am to 4pm.

Families will be invited to help create the boogie bike, Cockermouth's own cycle of sound.

The group will build a sound sculpture onto the frame of a specially-constructed bike and trailer, which will be ridden around the town over the following weekend and stop off for people to create sound with.

On September 4 and 5 from 10am to 4pm families can rework old bikes into mobile sculptures by building their own bikes of bling.

Bikes and some decorating materials will be provided but participants are invited to bring their own bits and pieces foraged from home, garages, scrap yards, charity shops and such places.

The bikes will be ridden and displayed around Cockermouth on September 8.

All workshops are free but places are limited and advance booking is recommended.

To book, call Gilli Goodfellow on 01900 829966.

The workshops are funded by Cumbria County Council and the Big Lottery.
