Around 100 people attended an open day at Workington's boxing club.

Workington Town Boys' And Girls' Club opened its doors last Saturday at the town's Moorclose campus.

The club relocated from Bolton Street to Workington Leisure Centre five years ago, after the building was demolished because it was in a bad state.

John Harrison, former club leader, and Norman Edgar, former boxing coach, opened the club with Isobel Milburn, daughter of the late Joe Stewart, who was also a boxing coach.

Phill Dryden, chairman of the club and youth director of the local community centre, said: "Norman, Isobel and John kindly opened for us and it was really a special moment for them and everyone else who was associated with the club past and present.

"I've had some really nice feedback from people, saying how impressive the facility is and how they hope we are successful in the future."

The club’s move ties in with the Needham Drive centre’s aim of becoming a hub for the local community.

Phill added : "Eventually we will be looking at setting back up the youth club side of Workington Town Boys' And Girls' in the community centre."

Peter Bales donated £50 to fund a new sign.

An Allerdale councillor, he said he was donating the cash personally, rather than in an official capacity.

He said: "I'm just so delighted with the work they've done, it's something good for the children of Moorclose to keep them off the streets.

"I know other groups are looking at moving in the community centre and I might decide to do the same again to support them."

Gerald Humes, director of the community centre, said: "It was a fantastic day, the great turnout we had just shows how people want this facility."

It costs £2 for junior sessions, for eight to 18-year-olds, and £3 for senior sessions, for those 18 and over.

Sessions run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 7pm for juniors and from 7.30pm to 8.30pm for seniors.
