A bride's big day was made even more memorable as one of her bridesmaids turned 100 - her grandma!

Vita Cresswell, 29, of West Croft, Seaton, married her partner Gary Whineray, 31, at Lorton Church earlier this month.

And grandma Martha Wallbank, was having a celebration of her own as she turned 100 the same day.

Martha, who is originally from Yorkshire, lived in Kirklands Bunglalows in Cockermouth and now lives in Solway House care home in Maryport.

"We wondered how people pick dates so we decided to pick her birthday," said Vita.

"Then she just said 'I'm the bridesmaid, aren't I?' and we just thought why not and went along with it. She was absolutely made up, it was so cute."

An elated Martha chose the hymns for the ceremony, decided on the post-wedding meal and had a ball as guests sang Happy Birthday to her in the church and presented her with a card.

Vita added: "The vicar said it was someone else's special day and her hand shot up.

"They had a party the day after and the first thing she said was how excited she was to be part of it which I thought was really sweet.

"I was worried I was going to take away from her day but she had a ball.

"It was quite emotional and so lovely to know she was there to share the day with us.

"She just sat and waved throughout the ceremony, smiling and singing."
