Two Maryport brothers are working to help people in their neighbourhood.

For younger brother David Porthouse, 37, this is another step in a dramatic year.

In one week he got married, saw the birth of his fourth child and ended up on the transplant list after learning a kidney problem had worsened.

Also this year, he learned that his job with the Money Advice Service had disappeared when then chancellor, George Osborne, announced on TV that it was being axed.

Despite all that, he jumped at the opportunity to help his brother and, therefore, the people of his hometown.

Graeme Porthouse, 41, has taken over the Ewanrigg Community Centre Job Club while David will offer free money and budget advice.

Both were born and bred in Maryport.

Graeme lives in Ellenborough while David is in Ewanrigg, just a few doors away from the centre.

Graeme has become involved through his employers, Inspira.

He said: "I work in Workington. When Inspira offered me the chance to take over the job club I jumped at it.

"I was born here. I belonged to the 2nd Maryport Scouts and the Boys' Club. I am passionate about Maryport and Inspira is giving me the chance to help."

He said when he found he was dealing with some people who might need financial advice he realised he had an expert on the doorstep and called his brother.

David hopes to set up his own money advice service in the New Year but has to wait for a kidney first.

He said: "I am on the cusp of needing dialysis. I have good days and bad days. If I do need dialysis I can do it at home. I should still be able to help when I am needed."

Graham said Inspira and he intended the job club to be more than a place for people looking for work.

He added: "We will be welcoming people who are looking at career changes, looking for work or returning to work, needing help with CVs or job applications or just want to talk about something."

He said David would help with budget management and questions of that nature.

The job club runs from 1pm to about 3pm at Ewanrigg Community Centre on Ennerdale Road each Wednesday.
