Army cadets from the Maryport, Cockermouth and Aspatria are among those who have been selected for Cumbria Army Cadet Force's first overseas training expedition in 20 years.

A group of 38 cadets from across Cumbria will fly out to Cyprus at the end of May and will spend time at Troodos Station, the oldest remaining British Military base.

The cadets will complete a challenging expedition in the Troodos Mountains, climbing and camping for three days and two nights on Mount Olympus.

They will also go to Cyprus' capital Nicosia for a tour of the United Nations headquarters, where they will meet the UN British Contingent and complete the military swimming test ready for a day of water sports and adventure training at Episkopi Garrison.

The group will meet the 1st Battalion Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment for a day of shooting and military training on the ranges.

Lewis Dean, 16, of the Aspatria detachment, Luke Hewitson and Alannah Hambley, both 16, and Katherine Gallop, 13, of the Cockermouth detachment, and Joshua Hine, Connor O'Neil and Ejay Devlin, all 14, and Rees Pattinson, 16, of the Maryport detachment will make the trip.

Sellafield Contractors Group Charity Committee has helped to fund the trip.

The 38 cadets will take part in a pre-trip training weekend next month.
