Sharon Barnes, named a West Cumbria Community Hero last year, is urging people to nominate those people who go the extra mile this year.

Sharon, of Edinburgh Road, Maryport, won the Volunteer of the Year award and is urging people to put their nominations forward.

The 52-year-old is a member of Ewanrigg and Netherton Tenants’ and Residents’ Association and provides a lifeline for cash-strapped families by cooking meals for up to 60 residents at the Ewanrigg Community Centre.

She also runs children’s cookery classes and has been involved in the organisation of several events.

Sharon said: "It was nice to be nominated, but a bit scary.

"But I was so chuffed that people recognised what we did. We now average 300 people through the doors at the community centre.

"It’s nice to know that you’re appreciated because there’s a lot of unsung heroes in the community.

"At the time it was a welcome pat on the back. The award is still on display and the certificate is still on the wall."
