Residents say no more homes should be built in Harrington until a bypass is built.

They have created an action group to oppose housing applications and will meet tomorrow night to discuss their next steps.

Harrington residents want a bypass to be built to reduce traffic along the A597.

Land at Whins Farm, off Main Road, has been earmarked by Allerdale council for housing in its draft local plan.

Developer Story Homes has already submitted a request to the council to find out what documents would need to accompany a planning application for the site, which could accommodate up to 120 homes and a play area.

Hilary Harrington, who represents the area on the town and district council and has been campaigning for years for a bypass, said: "Last week we asked the county council's local committee to have updated figures about the use of the road.

"The ones we have from 2015 say that 10,000 cars a day use that road.

"There's really heavy traffic and it's a road that children use to walk to school, but the pavement is only one metre wide.

"People wouldn't be against new houses if we had a bypass.

"There are 80 houses in the process of being built in Harrington and 600 workers are being relocated to Lillyhall from James Walker in Cockermouth, there is £5 million-worth of investment planned for Lillyhall and the new National College for Nuclear will open in September.

"It's not just about the houses, it's the industry. While we welcome new changes, we need the right infrastructure."

The action group will meet tomorrow at 7pm at Harrington's community centre to discuss the local plan.
