Two Workington students are waiting to find out if they've been elected onto the UK's Youth Parliament.

Molly Davies, 13, a year eight student at St Joseph's School, and Matthew Suddart, 16, a sixth form student at Workington Academy, have both put their names forward.

The duo are standing for election from the Allerdale and Copeland District category. Voting closes on Friday at 5pm.

Three Youth MPs will be chosen for Cumbria representing the North, South and West areas. Three deputy YMPs will also be elected.

Molly, of Chaucer Road, said: "I've always liked politics and it's something I would like to dedicate my time to.

"I want to make a difference in the world. I would be very proud to be able to do this. I would not back down and would stand by my views and the views of young people even if I disagree with them."

Matthew, of Birch Close, said: "I think young people in this area particularly are not heard really.

"I think one of the biggest things is communication. If I'm elected I can't say that I will change tuition fees, but I can put voices forward."

Elections traditionally take place between December and February, but Cumbria's elections were moved due to last year's floods.

Youngsters aged between 11 and 18 who are residents of the UK can run for Youth Parliament and are voted into office in an official election.
