A Cockermouth care home which was last year given permission to build a 15-bedroom extension has applied to build a further five bedrooms.

Lakeland Care Services was given the go-ahead to build on the back of Holmewood Residential Home on Lamplugh Road to provide a specialist dementia care unit.

A further application has since been submitted.

Residents of three neighbouring homes sent objections to Allerdale council.

They said the modern extension would be out of keeping with the existing building and its size and position on land higher than their homes would severely impact on their amenity.

Planning officers concluded that residential amenity for neighbours would not be significantly affected and the design of the extension was compatible with the building.

Nine members of the authority's development panel voted in favour, with three against.

Chris Root, of Lakeland Care Services, said: "There is little change to the original footprint which was agreed. "It's such a much-needed service, we felt it made sense to respond to ever-increasing demands."
