Weekly coffee mornings run by a Cockermouth church have raised £1,400 for charities.

From May until last month, there have been drop-in events held every Thursday in the United Reformed Church hall, off Main Street.

They are run by a team of 12, headed by Margaret Wardley, who has been involved from more than 15 years.

Mrs Wardley said: "We offer tea, coffee, biscuits and fellowship. Lots of people just come for the fellowship."

Between 20 and 40 people turn up each week.

In previous years, the proceeds have been sent to Malawi Orphan Care. This year it was decided to branch out and support other charities too.

Mrs Wardley added: "Because of the devastation caused by the earthquake in Nepal we chose to support groups there.

"Money has gone to the Nepal Earthquake Appeal, the Nepal Leprosy Trust and the Leprosy Mission will also benefit."

The group will also send funds to the Arughat Support Fund, set up by Eaglesfield GP Nick Cowan.
