A Cockermouth pub has been registered as a community asset.

The Swan Inn, on Kirkgate, is believed to be the oldest pub in town and was nominated by a group of its supporters, calling themselves The Friends of The Swan Inn.

Jim Chapple, a member of the West Cumbria branch of the Campaign for Real Ale, is a regular at the pub and led the campaign to have the pub registered on Allerdale council’s list of assets of community value, meaning should it ever come up for sale, the community will be given the opportunity to buy it.

Mr Chapple, of Castlegate Drive, said: "It’s my local and is a bit of an exceptional pub. It is not in the town centre so does not get tourists, but relies on the local community for support.

“It’s a home for the Cockermouth Mechanics Band and runs regular quizzes and charity events. It’s a fantastic facility which the community can use, a great meeting point with the added benefit that you can get a drink too.”

Landlord Joe Fagan took over in 2014. He said: “I’m pleased it’s been put forward. It’s great that people are interested in registering it as a community asset. Many pubs are falling by the wayside these days so I’m proud people have rallied round to look after this one.”

Only two other places in Cocker mouth have been registered as community assets. Harris Park and the Memorial Gardens were listed following an application from the town’s civic trust.

The pub is owned by Marstons and was named as Camra’s Pub of the Year last year in recognition of its special relationship with the locals and visitors.
