Daffodil Day will be held in Cockermouth next month, with lots planned for the town.

The town’s Rotary club held its first Daffodil Day, in celebration of William Wordsworth, last spring and had planned to make it a biennial event.

Organiser Ray Day said: “A lot of people were asking when we would be doing it again and wanting to be involved.

“People were really keen that we run it again this year, so we shall.”

It will be held on Saturday, April 1. Activities will be held in All Saints Church, where Wordsworth was christened. The event will be opened by Lord and Lady Egremont.

In the run up to the day, primary schools will be taking part in a painting competition. An exhibition of the pictures will be judged by Lord and Lady Egremont, as will a best shop window contest.

“They were keen to be involved again, as was the Chamber of Trade and lots of primary schools,” said Mr Day.

Many town groups will be involved, including the Rotary, civic trust, museum group, WI, Soroptimists and Cockermouth School.

The Wordsworth Trust will be running drop-in craft sessions for children, poetry sessions and talks throughout the day in the church. There will be exhibitions and music recitals.

Five thousand daffodil bulbs were planted by the Rotary club in Harris Park last year. More than 35,000 were planted throughout the town and its surroundings the previous year.

The event should provide a much-needed boost for the town.

“This is particularly significant with the extended flood defence construction work interrupting business in the town centre,” added Mr Day.
