County council workers had to abandon flood prevention work today when the road they were working on was flooded.

Pennygill Road in Flimby was inundated. Flood sacks were organised for residents but no flooded homes were reported.

The road has been closed for several days as new manholes and drain covers were installed.

Town councillor Carol Tindall and county councillor Keith Little, both residents in the village, carried out their own inspections early this morning and have monitored the situation throughout the day.

Miss Tindall said she and fellow town councillor Peter Kendall organised flood sacks and pout Allerdale on flood alert.

West View Close resident, Lawrence Tinnion, said he was very concerned this morning when water started pouring down the slope in front of his house.

He and his neighbours have been flooded on several occasions and some residents only returned to their homes earlier this year after Storm Desmond.

Mr Tinnion spent time this morning clearing drains and sweeping leaves, "but a few minutes later the drains were covered again."

He and his neighbours have put up the flood gates they bought after Storm Desmond.

Mr Little said he has asked Allerdale council to sweep the leaves, "but they only have one sweeper."

Both he and Miss Tindall has inspected Barrel Arch above Beckside, the small stream which is responsible for any major flooding in the town.

Mr Little said the culverts were clear and he did not have any immediate concern.

"The only houses that have been in danger are on Farmers Way, which flooded last time.

"There was a lot of water going down there. Now the rain has stopped and I am quite happy that we are well prepared and that no homes are in danger of flooding now."
