A couple who moved to Loweswater and used a website to post photos of what they were up to for their grown-up children to look at never realised what a global hit it would become.

Hundreds of people a day view the photos posted by Roger and Ann Hiley.

The couple bought their home in 2000, when living and working in Swansea.

Initially they rented it out as a holiday home, advertising it on a website they had set up.

“We posted some local photographs we had taken and that worked well,” said Roger.

A few years later they moved into the house and decided to use the website www.loweswatercam.co.uk to keep in touch with family and friends.

“We wanted to show the kids that you could live north of Manchester, so posted pictures of the area and what we were up to,” added Roger.

“Since then it has developed into a Cumbrian walking website and gives purpose to our photography of walks and everyday event.

“It has been picked up by those that love fellwalking and the Lake District.

“The web counter has now reached nearly 1.4 million hits.

“We have about 400 visits per day. We also get emails most days from viewers to the site.”

Visitors are from all over the globe.

It proved so popular that the couple decided to produce a calendar, using their favourite photos, many of which feature their dogs, Harry and Dylan. That was nine years ago and the calendars are still going strong.

This year they raised funds £380 for Cockermouth and Duddon mountain rescue teams and the air ambulance.
