A man has been airlifted to hospital after suffering serious injuries while cycling in the Lake District.

The cyclist, who is in his 40s, suffered severe leg injuries and minor head and facial injuries at Honister Pass while taking part in the Fred Whitton Challenge, which commemorates the life of former Lakes Road Club member Fred Whitton, who died in 1998, aged 50.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service team landed at Honister Slate Mine before being transported to the patient.

The man was assessed and treated at the scene before being flown to hospital in Preston.

His condition was described as stable.
