Rain threatened the start of Saturday's Dearham Carnival procession, with organisers and individuals racing to protect their floats with sheets of plastic

One of those, Pauline Scott, said she had only decided at the last minute to pick up some large plastic sheets from home.

“I am glad I did," she admitted. "Our float got a little wet but not too much damage was done.”

The shower delayed the carnival parade setting off and then it was hit by another small shower about halfway around.

However, nothing was going to stop those out to enjoy the carnival spirit, with crowds lining the streets to cheer on the dancers, bands and floats as they passed through the village.

Among the floats taking part was that of Floral Queen Rebecca Oglanby, which was awarded first place.

The Queen and Prince Philip were present along with dancers, superheroes galore, a Minecraft group and more.

Since the success of a fun day held as part of the carnival in 2012, organisers have continued to ensure there is plenty to do on the school field following the parade.

Spokeswoman Ruth Jackson said: “This has become a really popular part of the day.

“Unfortunately, because of the weather, we lost a couple of our events but there was still plenty to enjoy – fairground ride, bouncy castle and slide, refreshments and more.”

Another new tradition is an evening event for the adults. This year it was sold out long before carnival day.

“It is so popular we are looking at holding a similar event at another time of year,” Ms Jackson added.
