Two thousand plastic ducks raced down the River Cocker at the weekend, watched by crowds of supporters.

Cockermouth Round Table launched them from the cycleway bridge over Rubbybanks Road before racing to the footbridge downstream and attempting to catch the numbered ducks which had slipped through the net at the finish.

Organiser Mike Edmondson said: "We had them all in a big net at the start, hanging off the railing.

"The plan was to trap the ducks in a net across the river. "We caught quite a lot of them but I think there were about 100 escapees."

The event raised £1,500 for the Girlguiding Derwent Division.

The duck race used to be held every year in Memorial Gardens but has not taken place since the 2009 floods. A raffle had been held instead.

Mike said he was determined to resurrect it.
