A medal belonging to a Maryport-born FA Cup winner is to be sold at auction, with a guide price of between £20,000 and £30,000.

The piece of football history was awarded to former Tom Smith when he won the cup in 1901 playing for Tottenham Hotspur.

Mr Smith began his career at Preston North End in 1895 where he played in 53 matches, scoring eight goals.

He then joined Tottenham in 1897 and featured in both matches of the 1901 FA Cup final against Sheffield United, scoring the second goal during the cup-winning replay at Burnden Park in Bolton.

The first match between the two sides ended 2-2 with Tottenham winning the replay to become the first and only non-league football team to lift the cup.

Smith rejoined Preston in 1903 and played a further eight matches, scoring three goals.

He later played for Carlisle United before ending his career at Maryport Tradesmen. He died in 1937.

Smith’s 15 carat gold medal is due to go up for sale at New Bond Street, London, by Graham Budd Auctions on October 26.
