A family have been overwhelmed by support after their three-year-old son was found to have a cancerous tumour of the kidney.

Logan Waite, three, of Lawson Road, Aspatria, was this month diagnosed with a Wilms tumour. Doctors also found cancer in his lungs.

The community has raised more than £3,000 in just 10 days.

The little boy, who remains defiantly cheerful, is undergoing a gruelling regime of chemotherapy. He also faces surgery next month to remove his kidney.

Within days, family and friends of parents John, 35, and Kerry, 28, began raising funds to help with the frequent trips to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. Within 10 days the amount raised was £3,355 and climbing.

“We were overwhelmed and grateful. But we have also decided that we would like other people to benefit too,” said John.

“When we took Logan to the RVI we were given a brown bag with £10, some toys, vouchers – things that made it easier for us and Logan.

“We would like to contribute to something like that. It really helped us and we would like to help others.”

The family’s nightmare began when Kerry noticed blood in her son’s urine. Their doctor sent them to Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary where a scan revealed a tumour on the kidney.

Logan is the couple’s middle child, with big brother Harley, six, and sister Lacie, who is 18 months. The family said he is coping well with his illness.

“Children seem to be so resilient,” John said.

He added that one of the only differences was that Logan, who used to ref

use to sleep during the day, was now happy to take naps.

But ask Logan if he is okay and he will assure you: “I am not poorly.”

John works for Futamura Chemicals in Wigton and said his employers have been fantastic.

“I have been off work for 20 days and they ring to ask how Logan is. This and the reaction of the community have been a comfort. It is overwhelming,” he said.

Several groups in Aspatria and in Kerry’s home village of Blennerhasset have been raising funds and there are events to come, including one in the Black Bull pub in Cocker-mouth.

Anyone who would like to donate will find the Just Giving link on Logan’s Facebook page, Logan’s Journey.
