Keswick says farewell to its town crier this weekend.

Bob Bryden is hanging up his bell after 16 years "filling in" in the role.

Now 79, he has decided to step down and hand on the role to local actor David Hall.

Bob, of Blencathra Street, will perform for the last time on Sunday when he appears in a mummer’s play by the Keswick Street Theatre group, which he writes and acts for.

He said: "Bill Ireland used to organise the Christmas fair and hired a costume, then asked me to step in and I did it for two years."

He then took it on full time when Mr Ireland stepped down and there was no looking back when he had an outfit specially made by Eleanor Paxon.

Since then, he has appeared at events throughout the year, with highlights being the Christmas lights switch-on and the Victorian fair.

One of the highlights of his stint as town crier was welcoming Prince Charles to the Booths store.

Bob was mistaken for being royalty himself.

He said: "All the children had been dressed as little princes and princesses because of his brocade coat.

"The prince was wearing what looked like an old coat and did not look like royalty at all so all the children waved at me instead."

He was at the store in his official gear again last week when the supermarket officially reopened after flood damage repairs.

He has been busy in recent weeks.

Bob said: "A lot of people have needed cheering up after the floods."

Will he continue acting with the street theatre group?

He said: "Oh yes but I’ll be wearing my Edwardian blazer and Panama hat."
