Pupils at Dearham Primary School who are on the autistic spectrum have received an iPad.

The school has received the tablet computer from a family-friendly Nottingham music festival, Rockin for the Children.

The festival raises money for charities including its own project for autistic children.

Liz Hull, 34, of Crosby, and son Mark Rodger, 11, attended and were asked by organisers if they would be ambassadors for the event.

They were given a tablet computer by the festival and chose to donate it to Dearham Primary School where Mark is a year six pupil.

Bands play the festival for free. Among the performers at this year’s event were local band Heartbreak Remedy with members Stephen Jackson, Matty Penn and Luke Blair.

Liz said: "Mark was diagnosed with autism last year and he goes to Dearham Primary School which have given him good support so we decided to donate an iPad for children on the autistic spectrum.

"We're really thrilled. Mark goes to secondary school in September and it's like a leaving gift from him.

"They're really beneficial. There are specific apps for children with autism to help with organisational skills, independence skills and to help them with school work.

"They're a good tool for children with autism. One of the things they struggle with is social communication and it's great having it there as a communication tool."

Mark will start at Netherhall School in September.

Samantha Kidd, headteacher, said: "It's the first time we've been presented with something like this from this route.

"We've got a number of children who will benefit. It'll help with lessons, working from home and will give them the opportunity to access things they wouldn't normally be able to.

"Many thanks to Liz for pointing us in this direction."
